PREPare a uk-based band who specialise in the City Pop sound popular in Japan. The band commissioned me to produce artwork for their 2020 single ‘Over’.
The band were looking for a digital illustration of a utopian urban space -with a nod to an 80’s pop style. Below I have laid out each stage of the development of the artwork. From the first (very rough) sketch and the first designs we felt it was a bit on the nose and literal so we worked through a number of versions breaking the composition down and eventually landing on a more subtractive minimal design that had developed into something completely abstract. Though I was happy with the digital illustration I’m a lot more satisfied with the ambiguity of the final green artwork. You can see the final design in green below; an abstract departure of the original, and from there you can see each previous stage - an insight into how the original concept progressed and essentially simplifying the initial idea.
